After using it a bit it is really nice and great piece. Also can be purchased at auto stores. Does very well detecting cold spots, the lazer feature is great!

Simply does not work.
We had a solid rod of aluminum heated to 230F and verified with a highly accurate Fluke thermocouple. This thing read 70F. Guy at the store didnt believe me. I noticed he smoked, so I asked for a cigarette lighter and proceeded to immerse my car key in an open flame for 30 seconds. This thing read 70F again. Luckily, he gave me my money back. We got it to at least track a transient condition for a moment, (instead of just reading 70 plus or minus 5 degrees for everything) and when it did track it was off by over 100F. Waste of money, but what do you expect for $30. I was a fool to think it would be acceptable.

First, know what a "spot ratio" is. This product reads the temperature average in a spot that is 1/8 the diameter of the distance the tool is from the surface you are measuring. In other words, when that guy was trying to read the temperature of an aluminum rod (see poor review), unless the rod was at least an inch in diameter and he was holding the thermometer less than 8 inches from the rod, he was bound to get a low reading. It is good for reading temperatures of broad surfaces, not narrow rods or car keys. Of course, that review might have been about a defective probe, but it also doesn't sound like he was using it properly to me. For it's purpose, it is great. I use it to test for sticking calipers on disk breaks and uneven pressures during breaking (one disk getting far hotter than the rest during after heavy braking). Can also be used as a great thermometer to check surface or flue temperatures of a wood stove! Just hold it close enough to make sure you are getting the surface you intended (it measures my hand surface temperature at 95, which is about right). I've used it for over a year, no problems.
